Sioux City, IA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

No applications shall be received or permits issued for the installation, alteration or repair of any electrical equipment or to any person, firm or corporation unless the applicant is the holder of a State of Iowa Electrical Contractor's license entitling such applicant to secure permits for and to execute the work described in the application for the permit. No electrical work as defined in this chapter shall be done unless an application has been received and a permit issued by the inspection services division. Applications for electrical permits shall be submitted by the holder of the electrical contractor's license doing the work. The application shall be on forms supplied by the inspection services division and shall include the following information: correct address and description of the work to be done, the ampacity, voltage, phase, number of service conductors, number of meters to be installed and removed for the electrical service and other necessary information. A permit shall be issued if the electrical work, as proposed in the application for a permit, meets the requirements of this code. If sketches, plans and specifications are requested by the manager or his authorized agent or representative, they must meet the requirements of these chapters. A separate permit shall be obtained for each building or portion thereof not completed under one contract.
