Vanderburgh County, IN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Vanderburgh County's building code incorporates by reference the building rules of the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission, including Article 17 of Title 675 of the Indiana Administrative Code, the Indiana Electrical Code, under Section 15.12.010(A)(4), and later state amendments fold in automatically as they take effect. Electrical installation, alteration, or repair work triggers the same general building-permit rule as any other construction under Section 15.08.030(A), and the joint department of building commissioners prices electrical permits under the Section 15.08.080(B) fee schedule: a service under 400 amps costs $30.00, a service over 400 amps costs $30.00 plus $12.50 for every 100 amps above the 400-amp threshold, circuits under 100 amps run $1.50 each, circuits over 100 amps run $4.00 each, a repair or remodel with no new circuits costs $30.00 residential or $50.00 commercial, and temporary service or a gas/electric activation each cost $30.00.

Disputes over how a provision of the electrical code should be read go to the county's Board of Electrical Code Interpretation, created under Section 15.12.070, made up of three licensed master electricians, three licensed journeyman electricians, and the chief electrical inspector; the board hears complaints and reports its interpretation back to the joint department of building commissioners. Covered electrical work must also be inspected before it is closed in, and the department must respond to an inspection request within sixteen working hours under Section 15.12.090.
