Lead-based paint regulations in San Bernardino County apply to residences built before 1978 under federal Environmental Protection Agency Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule and California Health and Safety Code 17920.10. Contractors performing renovation, repair, or painting disturbing more than 6 sq ft of painted surface per room interior or 20 sq ft exterior must be EPA-certified Renovation Firms employing certified renovators. Lead-safe work practices include containment with plastic sheeting, HEPA vacuum cleanup, prohibition on open-flame burning and high-temperature heat guns, and disposal as hazardous waste if contamination is confirmed.
