Iredell County, NC Building Safety: Plumbing Permits (2026)

Section 4-58 adopts the North Carolina Plumbing Code, part of the North Carolina State Building Code, as amended from time to time, as the county's plumbing code, enforced by the plumbing-heating-air conditioning inspector under Sec. 4-82. Section 4-106(a)(2) requires a written permit from the inspection division before anyone may commence installation, extension, or general repair of any plumbing system. Section 4-106(b) exempts construction, installation, repair, replacement, or alteration costing $5,000 or less in a single-family residence or farm building, unless the work adds to or changes the design of plumbing, in which case a permit is still required regardless of cost.

Detailed plans and specifications must accompany any permit application where the total estimated cost of the building exceeds $30,000, per Sec. 4-108. Plumbing permit fees are set by a schedule kept in the office of the plumbing-heating-air conditioning inspector under Sec. 4-109. A plumbing contractor must register at the inspection division office with name, place of business, and North Carolina state license number before doing business in the county, under Sec. 4-65. Every plumbing system connected to a dwelling must tie into an approved sanitary sewer or other county-health-department-approved disposal system per Sec.

4-62(b). A permit lapses six months after issuance if work has not started, or immediately if work is discontinued for 12 months, per Sec. 4-113, and cannot be revived without securing a new permit.
