San Angelo caps residential structures at 35 feet or 2½ stories in every single-family and low-rise multifamily district, from R&E and RS-1 through RM-1, under Zoning Ordinance Sec. 501.A.
Under San Angelo Code of Ordinances ch. 12, Exhibit A, Sec. 501.A, the R&E, RS-1, RS-2, RS-3, and RM-1 districts all limit buildings to 35 feet and 2½ stories, whichever is less. Sec. 507 governs how height is measured and which projections — chimneys, antennas, and mechanical equipment — may rise above the cap. High-rise multifamily (RM-2) and nonresidential districts follow separate standards. A structure taller than the district limit needs a variance from the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Exceeding the height limit stops the permit and requires the structure to be lowered or a variance obtained. Fines up to $500 per day, each day a separate offense.
