Prince George's County's Zoning Ordinance caps building height by base zone. In the common RSF-65 single-family zone, the principal structure limit is 40 feet and accessory structures are capped at 15 feet. Tall accessory structures also need extra setback.
Section 27-4202 sets maximum structure heights per residential base zone. In the Residential Single-Family-65 (RSF-65) Zone, a principal structure may not exceed 40 feet and an accessory structure may not exceed 15 feet. Under Section 27-5202, an accessory structure (other than a fence or wall) taller than 10 feet must be set back from the nearest side or rear lot line 1 additional foot for every foot its height exceeds 10 feet. Fence height is measured separately under Section 27-6603. Height measurement rules and exceptions (chimneys, steeples) appear in Section 27-2200. Bowie, Laurel, and College Park set their own limits.
Exceeding the zone's principal or accessory height limit, or failing the added setback for a tall accessory structure, is a violation that can require a variance, redesign, or removal.
