Full Breakdown
Fairfax County's zoning ordinance permits home-based businesses only for uses on a closed list: online-only retail sales, small health/exercise facilities, repair of small household items like musical instruments and watches, offices, sewing or tailoring, art studios, small-scale production, and specialized instruction. Automobile or vehicle repair is not among them, so operating a residential auto-repair business is not an allowed home occupation anywhere in the county.
Violations & Fines
Running an unlisted use such as vehicle repair as a home-based business is a zoning violation, since the permitted-use list in the ordinance is exhaustive.
