Full Breakdown
Reading's zoning code lets residents run limited home occupations out of their houses, but § 600-1006.A(14) draws a hard line at vehicle work: home occupations "shall not involve commercial repair of motor vehicles," alongside a parallel ban on manufacturing beyond custom crafts and sewing. That exclusion applies to both "minor" home occupations, which are permitted by right, and "major" ones, which need Zoning Hearing Board special exception approval under § 600-1006.B, so there is no path to license a home-based auto repair shop in a residential zone. Auto repair remains lawful only where zoned commercially and permitted under § 600-1105's auto service station standards.
Violations & Fines
Operating a vehicle repair business from a residence violates § 600-1006 and can be cited as an unpermitted home occupation by the City's Zoning/Codes Enforcement Office, which can order it stopped.
