Summary
Outdoor cannabis cultivation must sit at least 1,000 feet from any K-12 school, public park, childcare center, or drug treatment facility, with indoor grows requiring a 600-foot school setback in unincorporated Sonoma County.
Outdoor cultivation sites shall be setback a minimum of one thousand feet (1,000') from a school providing education to K-12 grades, a public park, childcare centers, or an alcohol or drug treatment facility. The distance shall be measured in a straight line from the property line of the protected site to the closest property line of the parcel with the cannabis cultivation use. This park setback may be reduced with a use permit when it is determined that an actual physical equivalent separation exists due to topography, vegetation or slope, that no offsite impacts will occur, and that the cannabis operation is not accessible or visible from the park.
(7)Property Setbacks - Indoor. All structures used for indoor cultivation shall comply with the setbacks for the base zone and any applicable combining zone. Structures associated with cultivation shall not be located in the front yard setback area and shall be screened from public view. There shall be no exterior evidence of cultivation either within or outside the structure. Indoor cultivation within agricultural and resource zones shall be setback a minimum of six hundred feet (600') from a school providing education to K-12 grades. The distance shall be measured in a straight line from the property line of the protected site to the closest property line of the parcel with the cannabis cultivation use.

Full Breakdown
Sonoma County Code § 26-88-254 sets tiered setbacks for commercial cannabis cultivation in the unincorporated county's agricultural and resource zones. Outdoor and mixed-light cultivation must sit at least 1,000 feet from any K-12 school, public park, childcare center, or alcohol/drug treatment facility, plus 100 feet from property lines and 300 feet from neighboring residences or business structures. Indoor cultivation in ag/resource zones needs only a 600-foot school setback. Distances are measured in a straight line, property line to property line. A separate dispensary rule under § 26-88-256 requires 1,000 feet from a school, public park, or another dispensary.
Violations & Fines
Building or expanding cultivation inside the buffer without a use permit variance violates the zoning permit and can trigger suspension, revocation, or denial by the Agricultural Commissioner or Permit and Resource Management Department.
