Cannabis cultivation is illegal in Grand Prairie and throughout Texas. The Texas Controlled Substances Act prohibits possession and cultivation of marijuana. Only the Compassionate Use Program allows limited low-THC cannabis for qualifying patients.
Cannabis home cultivation is illegal in Grand Prairie under the Texas Controlled Substances Act (Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 481). Marijuana is classified as a controlled substance, and possession of any amount is a criminal offense. Texas has not legalized recreational cannabis. The Texas Compassionate Use Program (CUP) allows licensed dispensing organizations to provide low-THC cannabis (no more than 1% THC) to patients with qualifying medical conditions, but patients may not grow their own. Grand Prairie does not have any local ordinance permitting cannabis cultivation, and the city enforces state law. As of March 2026, Texas has also banned smokable hemp products.
State criminal offense. Possession under 2 oz: Class B misdemeanor (up to 180 days jail, $2,000 fine). Cultivation treated as possession based on quantity.
