Sangamon County requires all dogs (and cats and companion animals) to be restrained at all times when off the owner's property - either on a leash or under another recognized form of control. Any dog found running at large may be impounded by Sangamon County Animal Control. The county rule is enforced alongside the Illinois Animal Control Act, 510 ILCS 5, which gives counties dog-control authority and prohibits dangerous dogs from leaving the owner's premises off-leash.
