Shelby, MI Curfew Laws: Juvenile Curfew (2026)

Chapter 159 of the Village Code, adopted in 1966 by Ordinance No. m. Sunday through Thursday, or after midnight on Friday and Saturday. Section 159-2 carves out four exceptions: minors have an extra half hour after a school- or church-organized activity, or one supervised by a responsible adult, ends; minors accompanied by a parent or another adult responsible for their conduct are exempt; the evenings before national holidays are treated like a Friday or Saturday night; and the Village Council can grant special exceptions by resolution if the request carries the favorable endorsement of the Chief of Police.

Enforcement sits with the Chief of Police under § 159-3, who is authorized to request identification from any young person there is probable cause to suspect is covered by the chapter. An earlier version of the code let the Chief report violators' names to the Village Council, but that provision was repealed when the code was readopted. Section 159-4 sends every violation to Juvenile Court: rather than a standard civil-infraction fine, a minor who breaks curfew is dealt with under Michigan Juvenile Court law and procedure, which routes the matter through the county's juvenile justice system rather than the village's municipal civil-infraction docket used for adult offenses elsewhere in the code.
