Summary

Ascension Parish parks and playgrounds close at dark unless an organized activity has prior written approval from the recreation director. Games must wrap up by 9:30 p.m. on school nights or 10:00 p.m. otherwise, with lights off and the facility closed by 11:00 p.m.

These county ordinances apply to unincorporated areas of Ascension Parish. Incorporated cities within the county may have their own rules that take precedence over county-level regulations.

(a)Generally, all parks close at dark unless participating in an organized activity pre-approved by the recreation director. All games or other activities at public parks or playgrounds must be concluded by 9:30 p.m. on all evenings which precede a day in which the public schools of the parish are in session and by 10:00 p.m. on all evenings which precede a day in which the public schools of the parish are not in session. In both of the above circumstances, the lights are to be turned off and the facility closed by 11:00 p.m. Exceptions to these times will only be honored when there is prior written permission from the recreation director.

Full Breakdown

m. Any exception to those closing times needs prior written permission from the recreation director. Subsection (c) backs the schedule with physical enforcement tools: the parish president and the recreation department are authorized to install gates, fences or other security measures to make sure the closing times are actually observed. The same section separately bars firearms, illegal drugs and alcohol from parks, with a carved-out exception for adults-only events at four named facilities, Roger J. Clouatre Memorial Park, Darrow Community Center, Oak Grove Community Center and Richard Brown Community Center, and bans tobacco and vaping products outright under subsection (g). The rule applies to Ascension Parish Government-run parks; it doesn't govern separately-operated municipal parks inside Gonzales, Donaldsonville or Sorrento.

Violations & Fines

Possessing alcohol, a firearm or an illegal drug in a public park outside the adults-only exception draws a fine of not less than $250.00 nor more than $500.00 per violation, and/or up to six months in jail, at the court's discretion, under Section 15-2(d). The closing-hours rule itself is backed by the parish's authority to fence or gate a park to keep people out after the posted closing time under subsection (c).

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do Ascension Parish parks close?
Section 15-2(a) closes parks at dark unless a pre-approved organized activity is underway. Even then, games must end by 9:30 p.m. before a school day or 10:00 p.m. otherwise, and the lights and facility must be shut down by 11:00 p.m.
Can I get permission to use a parish park later than the posted hours?
Only with prior written permission from the recreation director. Section 15-2(a) makes clear that any exception to the closing schedule has to be approved in writing in advance; there's no automatic exception for private gatherings or leagues.
Is alcohol allowed in Ascension Parish parks?
Generally no. Section 15-2(b) bars alcohol, firearms and illegal drugs from parks, but carves out an exception for adults-only social events, dances, parties and receptions, at four named facilities: Roger J. Clouatre Memorial Park, Darrow Community Center, Oak Grove Community Center and Richard Brown Community Center.
