Walnut Creek parks and open space are closed from sunset (or posted time) to sunrise under WCMC Β§4-4.112, unless a permitted event is in progress. Civic Park, Heather Farm, and trailheads close 30 minutes after sunset. Violators subject to citation for trespass and infraction fines.
Walnut Creek Municipal Code Chapter 4-4 governs public parks, open space, and trailheads. All city parks close from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise unless otherwise posted or a valid Special Event Permit authorizes after-hours use. Major parks with specific posted hours: Civic Park (closes sunset), Heather Farm Park (closes 10 PM during summer DST, sunset otherwise), Larkey Park (sunset), Rudgear Park (sunset). Walnut Creek Open Space areas including Shell Ridge, Lime Ridge, Acalanes Ridge, and Sugarloaf Open Space close at sunset; trail use after dark is prohibited and dangerous due to unmarked hazards, coyotes, and mountain lions. The Iron Horse Regional Trail (operated by East Bay Regional Park District) closes at 10 PM. After-hours presence in parks is a misdemeanor under WCMC Β§4-4.112 punishable by fines up to $500 and/or 6 months jail, though first offenses typically result in warnings or citations. Sleeping, camping, and unauthorized vehicle parking in park lots after hours are separately prohibited. Parents are responsible for ensuring minors comply. Park curfew is enforced by Walnut Creek Police and park rangers.
