All consumer fireworks β including "safe and sane" varieties β are completely BANNED in Walnut Creek year-round. Possession, sale, use, or discharge of any fireworks within city limits is a misdemeanor carrying fines up to $1,000 plus civil penalties, and offenders may be responsible for fire suppression costs.
Walnut Creek Municipal Code prohibits all fireworks, aligning with Contra Costa County's countywide fireworks ban. Even fireworks labeled "safe and sane" by the California State Fire Marshal and legal in some other California cities are illegal here. The ban covers firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, sparklers, fountains, aerial shells, and any pyrotechnic device. The city and ConFire aggressively enforce the ban especially around Independence Day, when additional patrols are deployed. Residents can report illegal fireworks via the city's online complaint portal or by calling ConFire non-emergency. Administrative citations start at $500 for a first offense and escalate; under ConFire ordinance, violators can also be billed for any fire response costs if their fireworks cause an incident. Only licensed professional pyrotechnic displays (such as the city's public July 4 show at Heather Farm Park, when held) are lawful. Bringing fireworks in from Nevada or from cities where they are legal does not create an exemption β they are contraband the moment they enter Walnut Creek.
