Pittsburg is one of the few Contra Costa cities that permits state-approved 'Safe and Sane' fireworks. Sale and discharge are allowed only from noon on July 1 through 10 PM on July 4. All aerial, exploding, and out-of-state fireworks remain illegal with significant fines and misdemeanor liability.
Unlike most Bay Area cities, Pittsburg allows the sale and discharge of California State Fire Marshal approved 'Safe and Sane' fireworks during a limited Independence Day window. Per the Pittsburg Municipal Code fireworks chapter, licensed nonprofit organizations may sell Safe and Sane fireworks from approved temporary stands from noon on July 1 through 9 PM on July 4. Discharge by residents is permitted only between noon on July 1 and 10 PM on July 4. Safe and Sane fireworks bear the State Fire Marshal seal and include ground-based items such as fountains, cones, sparklers, and wheels that do not fly or explode. All aerial fireworks, firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, M-80s, and fireworks purchased out of state (including Nevada) are strictly illegal under California Health and Safety Code 12500 et seq. Discharge is only allowed on private property with the owner's consent; discharge on streets, sidewalks, parks, and public land is prohibited. State law imposes a minimum 1,000-dollar fine for illegal dangerous fireworks; the city can also assess administrative fines and cost-recovery for Fire Department responses. Parents are liable for minors' use. Fireworks are banned entirely during Red Flag Warnings or when the Fire Chief declares an emergency restriction.
