All fireworks - including 'safe and sane' - are illegal to possess, sell, or discharge anywhere in Antioch and throughout Contra Costa County. Antioch adopts the California Fire Code through Municipal Code Chapter 8-15, and California state law prohibits possession of dangerous fireworks without a valid permit.
Antioch is a non-fireworks city. The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (CCCFPD), which serves Antioch, and the Antioch Police Department enforce a county-wide ban on ALL consumer fireworks - this includes items marketed as 'safe and sane' as well as the federally classified 'dangerous fireworks' (firecrackers, skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, M-80s, etc.). California Health & Safety Code section 12677 makes possession of dangerous fireworks without a valid permit a misdemeanor, and section 12505 defines what constitutes a dangerous firework. CCCFPD operates a tip line (1-833-885-2021) for residents to report illegal fireworks. Permitted public displays (such as the annual Fourth of July show at Waldie Plaza in Antioch) are conducted only by state-licensed pyrotechnic operators.
Possession or discharge can be charged as a misdemeanor under California Health & Safety Code section 12677 (dangerous fireworks) carrying potential jail time and fines up to $1,000 per HSC section 12700 et seq. Civil administrative fines are also available, and illegal fireworks are subject to immediate seizure by Antioch Police or CCCFPD.
