Holidays with no trash collection, by city and county
A directory of the 30 cities and counties on this site whose quoted code or schedule text lists the holidays with no trash collection in a form the builder reads, with the make-up rule where the same text gives one.
Findings
- Among the 30 holiday pickup rules on this site whose quoted text lists the no-collection holidays in a form the builder reads, Christmas Day is on all 30, Thanksgiving on 27 and New Year's Day on 25.
- The site holds 151 holiday pickup rules. The builder reads a list in 30 of them; 60 name no holiday in the quoted text, and 61 name holidays in a form the builder does not read.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on 6 of the 30 lists, Presidents Day on 1, Juneteenth on 1 and Veterans Day on 2.
- 9 of the 30 lists name the same 6 holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
- The shortest list names 1 holiday and the longest names 11; the most common length is 6, on 11 of the 30 lists.
- The builder read a make-up rule in 22 of the 30 passages: one day later for the rest of the week in 4, one day later in 11, the next regular collection day in 4, "the following collection day" in 1, an alternate date in 1 and more than one rule in 1.

The full table
The column “How many” is worked out from values the quoted text states, so it can show a figure the quoted text does not print.
An empty cell means the builder read no value for it in the quoted text. It does not mean the code has none. The link in each row is the address stored on the rule page for that passage, or the address of the cited section where a link correction or the comparison with the live code recorded one. It can open the front page of the code or a different part of the code, not the cited section, so look the section up by its citation. “Source last checked” is the date recorded on a rule page when the page was last written or edited, or when a software re-check last found no newer edition of the code or no change to the source page, whichever is later. It is not a record of anyone comparing a rule page with its source.

How this was made
Each row comes from one page of this site under Trash and recycling, Holiday pickup schedule. Every such page stores a passage recorded as copied from the place's code or from the collection schedule the place publishes on its own website. The builder does not open the source, so it cannot tell a faithful copy from a miscopied one. For this topic the published schedule is often the governing document, because a code often leaves the holiday calendar to a department. The values here come only from that stored passage. Nothing is taken from the page's summary or from outside knowledge.
The values are read by fixed text patterns, with no model involved. The builder finds runs of holiday names in the passage. A run is used only when the text around it says, of that run, that collection does not happen or is put off. Three forms are read: the same sentence says so and leads into the list ("There will be no collection on"); the sentence just above a bare list says what happens on a holiday; or the text right after the list points back at it ("these holidays", "when the holiday falls") and says collection is delayed, moved or not made. A list the text makes optional ("the contractor may observe"), a list of days on which nothing changes, a phrase that names weeks and not days ("the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas"), and a list about a landfill, bulk pickup, tree pickup, parking, office hours or commercial service are not used.
Names are grouped under fourteen fixed labels, so "Fourth of July" is shown as Independence Day and "Thanksgiving Friday" as Day after Thanksgiving. The count is the number of those labels in the list. A rule is left out whole when its list names a holiday outside the fourteen, when it names another holiday away from the list without saying that day is unchanged, or when the list and its statement do not fit in one quote. Nothing is joined across an omission mark in the stored passage. The quote shown with each row is cut from the stored passage, is at most 300 characters long, and holds every holiday shown for that row. The builder checks this before a row is written.
The make-up rule is read from the sentences of the stored passage that sit beside the list, that speak of holidays or that name one, and from the two sentences after each of those. It is shown under a fixed label. A statement that one weekday's collection is put on the next weekday ("Thursday collection moves to Friday") is read as one day later. "The following collection day" is shown in those words, because it can mean the household's next regular day or the next day the trucks run. Where the quote has room it holds the rule's own words; where it does not, they are in the passage on the linked page. A blank means the builder read no rule in the passage, not that the place has none.
No rule was left out for its source: all 151 link to a recognized code publisher or to the place's own website, and for each the citation or the source link names the place. A rule quoted from a state law site, or from a site that is not on this site's list of official sources, would have been left out. Of the 151 rules, 30 list their holidays in a form the builder reads and are shown; 60 name no holiday; 61 name holidays in a form the builder does not read. Each row links to the official source recorded on its rule page. That link does not always open the cited section or schedule: it can open the contents page of the code or another chapter, and a link can stop working. The file was built on 2026-10-13.
What this does not show
These are annual documents. Collection schedules change each year, and a place can change its list without changing its code. In 7 of the 30 rows the note ties the list to one year: the quoted text gives a year or calendar dates, or the citation names the schedule of one year. A holiday that falls on a weekend that year can be missing from such a list. The "Source last checked" date on each row is the date recorded on the rule page when the page was last written or edited, or when a software re-check last found no newer edition of the code. It is not a record of anyone comparing the passage with its source. In this file those dates run from 2026-09-08 to 2026-10-13. Check the linked source before a holiday.
This is a directory of places this site covers, not a sample of local governments, and it holds only the 30 whose stored passage carries a list the builder reads. 12 of the 30 (40%) are in Florida, Arizona and New Jersey, the states with the most rows here. The counts per holiday describe these 30 lists and nothing wider.
A row shows what the quoted passage names. A place may also skip collection on a holiday its passage does not name, and where the passage says other days may be added the note says so. The passage may govern a city crew, a hauler under franchise, or every hauler in town. Read the cited section to see which.
60 rules name no holiday. They speak of holidays in general ("when a holiday falls on a collection day"), leave the schedule to an official, the hauler or a calendar published elsewhere, or deal only with holiday tree pickup, which is not counted as naming a holiday. 61 more name holidays in a form the builder does not read: schedules laid out as a table with one line per holiday, schedules quoted in pieces with omission marks between them, lists too long to show with their statement in one quote, codes that define holidays in one section and bar collection on them in another, codes that let the contractor choose whether to observe a holiday, lists of holidays on which the schedule does not change, passages about landfill hours, bulk pickup or parking, and a few wordings the patterns do not cover. Those places are not in the table, and their absence says nothing about their schedule.
