Tomball's zoning ordinance establishes general fence standards including setbacks, maintenance, and visibility requirements. Fences must be maintained in good repair and may not create sight obstructions at intersections or driveways.
The City of Tomball establishes general fence standards through its zoning ordinance. Fences must be set back from the property line sufficiently to ensure the entire fence structure is on the owner's property. Fences must be maintained in good structural condition with no leaning, missing boards, or visible deterioration. Chain link, wood, wrought iron, masonry, and vinyl are commonly accepted fencing materials in residential areas. Fences may not obstruct sight visibility triangles at street intersections or driveway approaches. Fences along public sidewalks must maintain adequate clearance and may not encroach into the public right-of-way. Fences in the historic downtown area may be subject to additional design review. All fences must comply with the applicable height limits for the yard in which they are located. Contact Development Services at (281) 290-1012 for fence regulations.
Fences in disrepair or failing to meet code standards result in a violation notice with a compliance deadline. The city may take enforcement action through Municipal Court if corrections are not made.
