Tomball limits residential fence heights to 4 feet in front yards and 8 feet in side and rear yards under the zoning ordinance. Corner lot fences must maintain visibility at intersections.
The City of Tomball regulates fence heights through its zoning ordinance. In front yards, fences and walls may not exceed 4 feet in height. In side yards and rear yards, fences may be up to 8 feet tall. On corner lots, fences within the sight visibility triangle at the intersection must not exceed 3 feet in height to maintain clear sight lines for traffic safety. The height is measured from the finished grade on the higher side of the fence. Retaining walls combined with fences may be subject to cumulative height restrictions. Fences on or near property lines must be built entirely on the owner's property. The zoning ordinance applies to all residential zoning districts. Contact Development Services at (281) 290-1012 for specific height questions.
Fences exceeding height limits result in a code violation notice with a deadline to modify or remove the noncompliant fence. Failure to comply may lead to citations and Municipal Court fines.
