Anaheim, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Anaheim Municipal Code Section 18.46.110 sets the fence, wall, hedge and berm standards citywide, and Section 18.04.140 for single-family zones points builders to this same section rather than a separate residential rule. Subsection .060 (Front Yards) fixes a 3-foot maximum height for any fence, wall, hedge or berm inside a required front yard setback, and extends that 3-foot cap to the street side setback of a reverse corner lot or a reverse building frontage on a corner lot, treating that street-facing side yard as a second front yard rather than an interior side yard.

Subsection .070 (Corner Lots) confirms that within the required street side setback of any corner lot in a single-family zone, the .060 front yard rules govern, not the higher side/rear allowance. Outside those front and corner street-side setbacks, Table 46-B (Permitted Fences and Walls) lets side and rear yard fencing reach 8 feet, but a note to that table requires a building permit for any wall or fence greater than 7 feet before construction. Pilasters and light fixtures built into a front yard fence may rise to 4 feet if spaced at least 8 feet apart (.0601), and in the RH-1 and RH-2 hillside zones, decorative wrought-iron front yard fencing can reach 6 feet if the solid portion covers no more than 20 percent of the surface, subject to the City Traffic and Transportation Manager confirming it does not block sightlines (.0602).

Hedges over 3 feet are barred within 7 feet of the adjacent public right-of-way unless the Traffic and Transportation Manager finds they will not impair line-of-sight visibility (.0603), which functions as Anaheim's corner-visibility check. Chain link and barbed wire are prohibited citywide wherever visible from a public right-of-way, with narrow exceptions for construction sites, vacant lots, railroad frontage and sports courts (.050).
