Orange, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

070(B) governs residential fence and wall height, measured from adjacent grade to the top of the structure, counting any attached lattice, privacy topper or screen toward the total. In the required front yard on a standard lot, height is capped at three and one-half feet. In side and rear yards, the limit is six feet measured from the highest elevation of land contiguous to the fence, and up to 10 feet as measured from the lowest elevation contiguous to it. Two exceptions raise the side/rear cap to eight feet (measured from the high side, 10 feet from the low side): properties within 300 feet of a freeway or railroad within an adopted noise contour, where a sound wall is allowed, and properties abutting a nonresidential zoning district.

070(B)(3) to preserve sightlines. 150 separately requires a corner cut-off at every intersecting street, driveway or alley, and bars anything from being placed or allowed to grow within that cutoff area in a way that impedes visibility, though it will not force removal of fencing installed before an adjacent driveway was built. A homeowner seeking more height than these limits allow can apply for a two-foot administrative adjustment from the Zoning Administrator or a variance from the Planning Commission.
