Amplified music rules in Orange, CA β also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances β set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
The City of Orange prohibits amplified music audible from 100 feet from the property line between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM under OMC Section 8.24. Daytime amplified music must not create an unreasonable noise disturbance.
Under OMC Chapter 8.24, it is a prima facie violation for any radio, television, music amplifier, tape player, compact disc player, musical instrument, or similar device to be played between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM when audible from 100 feet from the property line of the noise source or 150 feet from any non-stationary noise source. During daytime hours, amplified music must not create unreasonable noise that disturbs the comfort, health, peace, safety, or repose of reasonable persons. Chapman University and Old Towne entertainment venues must comply with the same noise standards. The noise level is measured as A-weighted sound pressure level in decibels (dBA) using a sound level meter at slow response.
Violations of the noise ordinance are infractions or misdemeanors. Repeat or egregious violations may result in escalating fines and enforcement actions.
