Garden Grove, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

110(B) sets the baseline: in any R zone a wall, fence or hedge up to 36 inches tall may go anywhere on the lot, and front-yard fences at that height can add pilasters up to six inches taller. Behind the required front yard line, interior lots may build fences up to seven feet, and corner lots get the same seven-foot allowance behind the rear line of the required front yard, except where the lot backs onto an alley, in which case a fence over 36 inches cannot enter a 10-foot vision triangle formed at the rear and side-street property line intersection.

Reverse corner lots get the same seven-foot allowance but must also preserve the triangular vision area on the side-street side at the rear of the lot. 100(F) establishes a broader safety vision-clearance triangle for all corner and reverse corner lots: measured 25 feet along the front and side lot lines from their point of intersection, with no tree, fence, shrub or other obstruction taller than 36 inches permitted inside that triangle. A fence over the seven-foot maximum must be openwork construction, meaning solid portions cannot exceed 60% of the fence face, and retaining walls topping a fill can only add a protective fence or wall up to 36 inches beyond the retained grade. Walls separating commercial or industrial property from residentially zoned land may reach eight feet where a six-foot separation wall is otherwise required or permitted.
