Anaheim requires pool barriers per AMC 6.56 and California Building Code Appendix Sections 419-421. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, swinging away from the pool. Barrier height and design must prevent child access.
AMC Section 6.56.010 and the Anaheim Building Code require barriers around all swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs. Barriers must comply with Sections 419, 420, and 421 of the Appendix of the current Anaheim Building Code. Gates must swing away from the pool and be self-closing with a self-latching device. When the release mechanism is less than 54 inches from ground level, it must be on the pool side at least 3 inches below the top of the gate. Pool barriers are typically required to be at least 60 inches high with no openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. The barrier must completely enclose the pool area. Existing pools undergoing substantial renovation must upgrade barriers to current code. All metal surfaces within 5 feet of pool water must be bonded to pool shell reinforcement per electrical code.
Non-compliant pool barrier: correction notice with 30-day deadline. Failure to install barrier: building permit hold and potential fine. Safety hazard: immediate abatement order.
