In unincorporated Snohomish County, fences up to eight feet tall are allowed without a building permit, and fences six feet or less may sit in any required front, side, or rear yard without a setback. Taller site-obscuring fences must meet the zone's building setback.
Snohomish County Code (SCC) Title 30 governs fences on unincorporated land. A fence up to eight feet high is exempt from a building permit under SCC 30.50.103(1)(b) so long as it has no masonry or concrete above six feet. Under SCC 30.28.040, fences six feet or less may occupy any required yard without a setback, while site-obscuring fences over six feet must meet the required building setback or the width of any required landscaped area. On corner lots, nothing over 42 inches is allowed in the sight-clearance triangle (SCC 30.23.100). Cities within the county set their own rules.
Fences exceeding exempt height or blocking the corner sight triangle are code-enforcement violations handled by Planning and Development Services (PDS); the county can require correction or removal.
