Harnett County, NC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

133(C) of the Unified Development Ordinance is the county's operative fence-and-obstruction rule at intersections, and it applies in every zoning district in the unincorporated area. It prohibits any obstruction to visibility on a corner lot that rises more than two feet above the level of the centerline of the street, measured within a triangular area. That triangle is bounded by the street right-of-way lines on the corner lot and a base line connecting points along those right-of-way lines 25 feet from the intersection corner. A solid fence, wall, hedge, sign, or parked equipment built taller than two feet inside that 25-foot triangle runs afoul of this section regardless of the zoning district the lot sits in.

The county's UDO does not carry a separate, generalized maximum height for residential side, rear, or front-yard fences outside of this corner-lot visibility standard; specific taller fence heights (commonly six to eight feet) appear only in narrower contexts elsewhere in the chapter, such as required screening buffers, junkyard and equipment-compound security fencing, and swimming pool enclosures, each tied to that particular use rather than to fences generally. 132 rather than a stand-alone fence-height cap.
