Harrison County, MS Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 822.01 of the Harrison County Unified Development Code sets the baseline fence standards that apply countywide outside the cities of Gulfport, Biloxi, Long Beach, Pass Christian and D'Iberville. Height is measured from ground level to the top of the fence, and posts may extend no more than eight inches above that line (§ 822.01(a)). A privacy fence enclosing a front yard, or placed adjacent to a street right-of-way, is limited to four feet: taller solid screening in those locations is not permitted (§ 822.01(b)).

Away from the street-facing front yard, a constructed fence may reach eight feet (§ 822.01(c)). Where a fence adjacent to the street exceeds four feet, it must be set back to the building setback line rather than built at the property line (§ 822.01(e)), and the amendment adopted 5/9/22 (*2204HC074) also encourages installing fences with the finished side facing the neighboring property or arterial street (§ 822.01(d)). Corner-lot fences must preserve a clear sight triangle at street and alley intersections (§ 822.01(f)), and hedges cannot be planted inside a public right-of-way (§ 822.01(g)). The Harrison County Code Office administers these standards during zoning permit review for new fence construction.
