Florence County, SC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Florence County regulates fence height through two sections of the zoning ordinance. Section 30-246(2)(g), part of the accessory buildings and uses article, allows fences and walls to be located in any required yard and along any property line, but any fence or wall exceeding eight feet in height needs a variance from the Florence County Board of Zoning Appeals before it can be built. Section 30-245 layers an additional, narrower restriction on corner lots in every zoning district except B-4: within the triangular sight area bounded by the two intersecting street rights-of-way and a line connecting points on them, no planting, fence, building, wall or other structure may be built or maintained between a height of two and a half feet and ten feet, measured above the upper face of the nearest curb, or the street centerline where no curb exists.

That triangle size varies by street type in the ordinance's typical-requirements table, from 15 feet on a minor driveway to 45 feet where two major streets intersect. Poles and support structures less than 12 inches in diameter are exempted from the sight-triangle rule. The general exceptions section, Section 30-242(5), reinforces the same visibility principle for fences located anywhere in a required yard or setback, stating no such structure or hedge may impede visibility at intersections. Property owners seeking a fence taller than eight feet, or a corner-lot fence that would sit inside the sight triangle, must apply to the Board of Zoning Appeals for a variance rather than building without approval.
