Gordon County, GA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 5.02.03(D) of the Gordon County Unified Land Development Code sets fence height in unincorporated Gordon County, Georgia. Height is measured from ground level at the base of the fence to the topmost part of the fence. In a side or rear yard the maximum is 6 feet in all residential zoning districts and 8 feet in all nonresidential zoning districts. In a front yard the maximum is 5 feet in all zoning districts, with one exception: the C-H, I-1 and I-2 districts are allowed 8 feet. Entrance gates and support columns in a front yard are capped at 8 feet in every zoning district.

Location rules sit beside the height numbers. Fences and walls can be located on or inside property lines. Setback requirements written for buildings do not prohibit or restrict a necessary retaining wall, below ground foundation or fence that the County requires for proper development of a site (Section 5.02.03(A)(2)). Fences and walls also cannot obstruct, hinder or impede pedestrian and vehicular traffic or present a nuisance, danger or hazard to the general public.

Corner lots carry the visibility rule. Section 5.02.03(A)(3) requires fences and walls to be located to avoid interference with the clear visibility area in Section 6.01.09. That section defines a triangle formed by the two intersecting rights-of-way or driveways and a straight line joining the right-of-way lines 20 feet from the point of intersection. The protected vertical space runs from 3 feet to 12 feet above the nearest edge of the street pavement, or of the riding surface of an unpaved street, so a solid fence taller than 3 feet inside that triangle sits in the protected band.

Screening fences have their own numbers. Outside storage screening in the C-G, C-H, I-1 and I-2 districts uses a fence or wall between 5 feet and 8 feet tall (Section 5.02.04), and dumpster screening uses a fence between 6 feet and 8 feet tall (Section 5.02.05).
