Greenwood County, SC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Greenwood County Code § 6-3-110 does not set a general maximum fence height for front, side or rear yards; the code instead relies on a corner-lot visual clearance rule. On any corner lot outside the C-3 general commercial district, no fence, structure, shrub or other planting that obstructs vision can be placed within 25 feet, measured in any direction, from the right-of-way of a street or road intersection. That 25-foot triangle keeps sightlines open for drivers approaching the corner from either direction. Elsewhere in the zoning chapter, the county does set fence height minimums and maximums for specific, narrower purposes rather than a blanket residential cap: a bufferyard fence separating a nonresidential use from an adjoining residential district must be at least six feet tall and opaque under § 6-3-69, and a private tennis court fence must be at least ten feet and no more than 12 feet high under the FA and WD district accessory-use standards.

A general residential fence in a front, side or rear yard, outside those specific bufferyard, tennis-court and corner-visibility situations, is otherwise governed only by the accessory-use setback found at § 6-3-109(c): the fence or wall must sit no closer than 18 inches to a street or road right-of-way. A homeowner planning a fence near a street corner in unincorporated Greenwood County should measure the 25-foot clearance zone before installing anything taller than ground cover, since the rule applies regardless of the fence's height once it blocks the sightline.
