Killeen, TX Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 31-856 measures fence height as the vertical distance from finished grade to the top of the fence, and that measurement includes any stem wall or retaining wall the fence sits on. Where two adjoining lots sit at different elevations, the lower lot's fence can add the elevation difference to the base limit, but it can never exceed 8 feet along that property line no matter the grade change. In a front yard, residential lots and the B-1 district are capped at 4 feet overall, or 6 feet for wrought iron, measured out to the required front setback line; fence columns cannot rise more than 12 inches above the fence itself, and no front fence may sit in the right-of-way or the sight distance triangle.

Side and rear yards allow 8 feet, but anything over 6 feet cannot be chain-link. Sec. 31-857 defines the corner visibility triangle as the area within the curb lines of an intersection bounded by a diagonal line drawn 35 feet back from where those curb lines meet, extending them if needed to find that point; fences there cannot obstruct a motorist's view under Sec. 28-241. A building permit from the Building Inspections Division is required to erect, move, or replace a fence under Sec. 31-853, with the application listing height, materials, location, distances to structures, and lot size.

Repairs using the original materials and design are exempt from the permit up to 25 linear feet of the fence in any 12-month period under Sec. 31-854.
