Lafayette, LA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 89-44(f)(1) applies the 36-inch cap to "new construction of fences or signs or placement of movable objects, and new planting of hedges, bushes or other plants" at intersections of a public street with a public or private street, while exempting utility structures, necessary traffic and street signs, and buildings that existed before the ordinance's adoption. The sight distance itself is engineered: Sec. 5 feet high down the intersecting major street for a distance keyed to that street's posted or 85th-percentile speed and lane count in Table 89-44-5.

For corner lots at the intersection of two private streets, Sec. 89-44(f)(6) lets a simpler 30-foot sight triangle stand in for the full calculation, inside which "no driveway, automobile, trailer, sign, movable object, fence, wall, hedge, or other structure" may be erected or maintained, unless the private street's speed limit demands a larger AASHTO-based triangle. Sec. 89-38(c)(6)a folds corner lots directly into this framework by making them "subject to the line of sight requirements of section 89-44(f)," and if that sight-line requirement calls for more clearance than the district's own front setback, Sec.

89-38(c)(6)c says the stricter sight-line rule controls. Outside a sight triangle, Lafayette's dedicated fence section, Sec. 89-32, sets no separate numeric height ceiling of its own; it instead defers to the setback-encroachment and servitude rules in Sec. 89-30(b)-(c) and Sec. 89-38(e) for where a fence may sit.
