Lake County, IN Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Beyond height caps, the Lake County UDO governs where a fence may sit. Fences may not be located within existing or planned street rights-of-way, and the director may require a survey to confirm placement. On corner lots in all districts, an intersection visibility triangle is established: nothing may be erected, placed, planted, or grown between 3 feet and 10 feet above the intersection center-point within the triangle, formed by lines extending 20 feet along each street lot line. This prohibition does not apply to traffic/highway signs, public utility lines, or non-opaque fences. Fences and walls are among the obstructions allowed within street, side, and rear setbacks (Table 21-1).
