Fences 6 feet or less in height may be installed in unincorporated St. Louis County without a building permit. Taller fences require a permit. Barbed wire and electrical fencing are prohibited in residential areas.
Under the County Zoning Ordinance §3110.1 (Fence Requirements) and §1110.302.7 (Property Maintenance), fences up to 6 ft are exempt from permitting but must still meet property-maintenance standards: structurally sound, no peeling/flaking paint, no rust. Corner-lot fences cannot intrude on the sight-distance triangle — the area bounded by the property lines and a line connecting two points 30 ft from the intersection.
Notice of Violation under §1110.302.7; ordered removal of barbed wire or non-conforming fence; fines up to $1,000.
