In the unincorporated parish (including Metairie), the zoning ordinance allows a fence up to eight (8) feet along side and rear lot lines. Front-yard fences are more restricted. Height is measured from the lowest adjacent soil and includes any chain, retaining, or low masonry wall beneath it.
Section 40-743.5 of the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance governs fences in unincorporated Jefferson Parish. A fence not exceeding eight (8) feet may be erected along lot lines in side yards or around a rear yard; front-yard fences face tighter limits. Where a fence follows a sloping grade, the maximum height may be averaged across stepped six-foot segments, but no portion may exceed nine (9) feet. Height is measured from the lowest elevation of soil adjacent to the fence and includes the height of any chain, retaining, or low masonry wall. Incorporated cities (Kenner, Gretna, Harahan, Westwego) set their own limits.
Fences violating the zoning ordinance are handled as zoning violations; the parish may require correction or removal and can pursue fines through code enforcement.
