Summary
Lafayette City-Parish sets no general fence height cap, fences may sit anywhere in a setback with zero clearance, but caps height at 36 inches inside street-corner sight triangles under Sec. 89-44(f), citywide and parish-wide alike.
It is unlawful to construct or maintain, or permit to remain, any fence, sign, movable object, hedges, bushes or other plants which exceed 36 inches in height measured from the street level on any lot where the fence, sign, movable object, hedges, bushes or other plants obstruct the line of sight at street intersections as defined in this section.
Official source re-checked September 7, 2026: no newer edition of the code had been published (publisher’s edition: Code of Ordinances: Supplement 65).
Full Breakdown
Chapter 89 sets no blanket height cap on residential fences: Table 89-38(e) lists fences among features that may encroach into any required setback with 'no restriction' and a 0-foot minimum setback from the street or lot line. The only numeric height limit is at street corners, Sec. 89-44(f) makes it unlawful to build or keep any fence, hedge, sign or movable object over 36 inches tall inside the sight triangle at a street intersection. Fences placed inside a public utility or drainage servitude also need advance written approval from LCG under Sec. 89-30(b)(7). These rules apply identically inside the City of Lafayette and in unincorporated Lafayette Parish per Sec. 1-3, not in Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, Youngsville or Milton, which run their own codes.
Violations & Fines
A hearing officer under Sec. 89-170 can fine a fence owner up to $500 per offense for a sight-line-blocking fence, with each day the violation continues counted as a separate offense.
