In Nampa residential yards, front-yard fences are limited to 36 inches (solid) or 48 inches (open vision). Fences up to 72 inches are allowed from behind the front of the house to the rear property line. Corner-lot side-street fences can reach 72 inches starting 50 feet back from the curb.
Fence heights are set by Nampa City Code 10-1-8 (Fences and Walls). In residential districts (10-1-8.D), interior lots may have solid/closed nonvision fences up to 36 inches, or open-vision fences up to 48 inches, in the required front-yard setback. Perimeter fences up to 72 inches are permitted from a point behind the front of the dwelling to and along the rear property line; solid fences over 36 inches generally may not be built across the front of a residence between side property lines without a variance. On corner lots, the same 36-inch/48-inch limits apply in the front-yard setback, and a 72-inch fence may run along the side street starting 50 feet back from the curb to and along the rear property line, provided no fence over 36 inches sits in a vision-clearance triangle (a 7.5-foot vision triangle is required where the rear line abuts an alley or drive approach). Heights are measured at grade within 6 inches of the bottom of the fence. Commercial/industrial properties (10-1-8.E) may have fences up to 8 feet (6 feet for multifamily projects). Walls, hedges, berms, and latticework are treated as functionally equivalent to fences for height purposes.
Fences exceeding the applicable height (e.g., a solid fence over 36 inches across a front yard) without a variance, or any fence over 36 inches in a vision-clearance triangle, violate 10-1-8. Unlawful or hazardous fences are subject to nuisance abatement under 3-4-2.
