Richmond limits residential fences to 42 inches in front yards and six feet in side and rear yards, with narrow exceptions for steel tubular and wrought iron designs in front yards.
Section 5.2.101 of the Richmond Unified Development Ordinance caps residential fences at 42 inches within any required front yard, except steel tubular and wrought iron fences may rise to six feet. Interior side, street side, and rear yard fences may reach six feet. Wood fences using a base board or kick board may reach a total of 6.5 feet, and a top cap up to two inches does not count toward fence height. Fences may taper from the front building setback line down to the 42-inch front yard limit. Height is measured from the ground next to the highest point.
Owners who exceed these heights face stop-work orders, code enforcement citations, and required removal or alteration of the fence at the owner's expense.
