Yuba County Development Code Section 11.19.040(B) caps front and corner-side-yard fences at three feet (four feet if the top foot is at least 25% open) inside the Valley Growth Boundary, and allows up to eight feet in side, rear and main building areas. Fences over seven feet need a building permit.
Heights depend on location and whether the parcel is inside the Valley Growth Boundary (VGB). Under Section 11.19.040(B)(1), within the VGB fences, hedges and freestanding walls in the required front and corner side yards may not exceed three feet; a four-foot fence is allowed at the back of the sidewalk if the top foot (or entire fence) is open or lattice design achieving at least 25 percent transparency. Outside those required yards (subsection B.1.a), fences up to eight feet are permitted; in residential VGB districts an eight-foot fence may be placed five feet from the back of sidewalk or 10 feet from the back of right-of-way on a corner lot's street side (B.1.b). Interior side and rear yards (B.3) and the main building area (B.4) are limited to eight feet, with taller walls allowed only for documented noise attenuation or, in non-residential zones, a demonstrated security need approved through a Waiver. Outside the VGB or on agricultural parcels, open 'agricultural style' fencing up to six feet is allowed along front and street-side property lines.
Enforced by Yuba County Community Development and Services Agency (Planning Department, 530-749-5470). Fences exceeding the allowed height without a Waiver or required building permit are code violations subject to correction.
