Sec. 9.4.1 - Residential districts. A.No fence or wall shall be built to a height greater than four feet in the front yard or eight feet in the rear or side yard above grade.B.Fence materials, color and/or texture not compatible in appearance with the principal residential structure and/or the general appearance of the neighborhood in which the lot is located may not be used for fencing materials.C.No fence or wall shall be constructed within a general drainage or utility easement, so as to block or materially impede the flow of stormwater runoff, nor in any road right-of-way.D.Electric fences, except for livestock protection fences, shall be prohibited. Invisible pet fences shall not be considered as an "electric" fence.E.Botanical Gardens may establish deer fences up to ten feet in height.

Unified Development Ordinance Sec. ' Botanical gardens get a narrow exception under Sec. 1(E), allowing deer fences up to ten feet high. Outside the residential districts, Sec. 2(A) sets a different, more permissive limit: a maximum fence or wall height of 12 feet within all required setbacks. A separate provision, Sec. 3, removes any height cap entirely for fencing around a correctional facility or public utility structure located within its required setback. Fence height also interacts with the county's corner-visibility rules: Sec. 7 requires no obstruction to vision above two feet within the sight distance triangle at street and driveway intersections, measured 25 feet from the lot corner on streets with 50 feet or less of right-of-way and 40 feet on wider rights-of-way, so a compliant eight-foot side or rear fence still cannot be positioned inside that triangle.
These fence-height standards govern only unincorporated Gaston County property; Gastonia, Belmont, Mount Holly, Cherryville, Dallas, Stanley and Bessemer City set their own separate fence-height limits inside town limits.
Violations & Fines
Erecting a fence taller than four feet in a residential front yard, taller than eight feet in a residential side or rear yard, or any fence that obstructs the sight distance triangle at a street or driveway intersection violates Sec. 9.4.1 and Sec. 9.7, and the county's Planning & Development Services department can require the fence to be lowered or removed.
