Full Breakdown

The Zoning Regulations define 'Fence' to include any wall that isn't a Building or Retaining Wall. Outside the C-L, M-G and M-L districts, fences top out at six feet in Front and Side Yards; those three districts allow eight feet. Every district caps Rear Yard fences at eight feet, measured from the lower adjacent grade. The Zoning Board can administratively approve a taller fence if it finds no adverse impact on a neighbor or the street. Separately, City Code § 214-27.1 limits hedges, shrubs and full-board fences to three feet within the sight triangle formed by two street lines meeting at a corner, running twenty-five feet along each.

Violations & Fines

An oversized Fence is a zoning violation; Stamford can order it reduced or removed. A corner fence blocking the sightline triangle under Code § 214-27.1 is a separate, citable hazard even if it meets the height limit elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall can a fence be in my Stamford front yard?
Six feet, per Zoning Regulations § 3.B, unless you're in the C-L, M-G or M-L district, where eight feet is allowed in front and side yards.
Does Stamford limit fences near street corners?
Yes. City Code § 214-27.1 caps hedges, shrubs and solid fences at three feet within the sight triangle at a corner lot, regardless of the general zoning fence-height limit.
