Chatham County, GA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Under Sec. 5-1.3(c), residential walls and fences must be built of chain link or other fence wire, decorative wrought iron, masonry, wood, or other materials customarily found within residential areas, and must be designed and constructed to be visually compatible with the neighborhood. Sharp-edged wire, sheet metal and salvage materials are excluded. Approved materials must still meet the district height limits (6 feet front/side, 8 feet rear) and the vision-clearance rule. Inside the City of Savannah, the NewZO (Sec. 9.6) provides a comparable menu of permitted materials such as wrought iron, aluminum, masonry, brick, stone, vinyl, decay-resistant wood and chain link for single- and two-family homes.
