In unincorporated Jefferson Parish, fences along street rights-of-way must be built with the finished side facing out: nondecorative posts, horizontal rails, cross-members, and similar unfinished components must be oriented inward toward the owner's lot. Screening fences required by permit must be opaque wood, brick, or masonry.
Section 40-743.5 requires that along street rights-of-way (except freeways and interstates on the Jefferson Parish Thoroughfare Plan), all nondecorative posts, horizontal posts, cross-members, and similar unfinished fence components be oriented inward toward the lot on which the fence stands, so the neighbor and street see the finished face. Fence columns may not exceed 18 inches in width, depth, or diameter. Where a screening fence is required for a nonresidential or multifamily lot abutting a residential district, it must be an opaque wood, brick, or masonry fence at least seven feet high. These material rules apply in the unincorporated parish only.
Fences with the unfinished side facing the street, or oversized columns, are zoning violations subject to correction and fines.
