Canton bans barbed wire in residential areas, electrified fences in every district (except invisible pet fences), chicken wire (except garden enclosures), and scrap, pallets or cattle fencing. Snow fencing is allowed only Nov 1–Mar 31.
Canton Ordinance 1134.02 lists prohibited fencing. Electrified or electric fences are barred in all zoning districts except invisible/radio pet fences. Barbed and razor wire are prohibited except in I-1 and I-2 industrial districts, where a fence may be topped with barbed wire not exceeding 12 inches, angled 45 degrees inward, with the lowest strand at least seven feet high. Chicken wire is allowed only for animal-resistant garden enclosures. Scrap materials, refuse, pallets, and cattle fencing are not permitted. Snow fencing is allowed only from November 1 through March 31. Stark County sets no material rules; townships regulate under Chapter 519.
Prohibited-material fences are zoning violations subject to removal orders and municipal-court fines until corrected.
