Little Elm, TX Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Little Elm Code Chapter 106 Zoning regulates fence materials by zoning district. In residential zones, barbed wire fencing is prohibited as it poses an injury hazard to residents and children. Electrified or electric fences are also prohibited in residential areas. Chain link fencing is generally permitted for side and rear yards in residential districts but is prohibited for new swimming pool enclosures under the Pool and Spa Requirements (March 2024). Wood privacy fences are the most common fence type in Little Elms residential neighborhoods. Cedar and treated pine are the most frequently used wood materials. Wrought iron, ornamental metal, and masonry walls are also permitted. Temporary construction fencing is allowed during active building but must be removed when construction is complete. Razor wire and concertina wire are restricted to industrial and certain commercial zones. HOAs in Little Elms master-planned communities like Paloma Creek, Union Park, and Eldorado often specify approved fence materials, stain colors, and styles that go beyond minimum municipal code requirements. Recycled or salvaged materials may not meet HOA standards even if the municipal code allows them.
