Riverside Municipal Code Β§19.550.020 establishes approved and prohibited fence materials. Prohibited materials include untreated wood prone to rapid deterioration, barbed wire or razor wire in residential zones, sharp pointed materials at pedestrian height, and materials creating a hazard. Approved materials include treated wood, masonry block, brick, stucco-finished walls, wrought iron, vinyl/PVC, and chain link. All fences must be maintained in good repair and not constitute a nuisance. Graffiti must be removed promptly. Retaining walls that also serve as fences have additional structural requirements requiring building permits.
Prohibited materials: code enforcement notice with correction period. Deteriorated fence creating hazard: nuisance abatement. Graffiti not removed: property maintenance violation. Each day of non-compliance is a separate offense.
