Mount Pleasant, SC Fence Regulations: Neighbor Fence Rules (2026)

448 of Mount Pleasant's zoning code sets two rules governing how a fence interacts with neighboring property. Subsection (A) requires that "the finished side of the fence must face outward, toward adjacent lots or the street, as applicable," meaning the smoother, more finished face of the fence, rather than the posts and structural framing, must be presented to the neighbor's property or the public street, not kept facing back toward the fence owner's own yard. 048(A)(12) of the Land Development Regulations, which protects sightlines for drivers and pedestrians at the intersection.

436 clarifies that a zoning permit is not required for a fence seven feet or less in height, unless it is built of brick, stone, or concrete, or sits on a corner lot along a lot line adjacent to a street right-of-way, in which case a permit is required regardless of height. Fences over seven feet, or built of masonry materials, therefore need a zoning permit from the Planning, Land Use and Neighborhoods Department even where the finished-side and sight-distance rules are otherwise met.
