Pottstown, PA Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 200 of the Zoning Ordinance requires a zoning permit to build or install any structure, and fences are named specifically alongside signs and storage buildings. Applications go to the Zoning Officer in the Pottstown Codes Department and must be signed by the property owner, lessee or an authorized agent under Section 201. Fee amounts are set and can be changed by Borough Council resolution rather than fixed in the ordinance text. Fences proposed inside the Conservation District or Gateway District overlays face extra submission requirements under Section 202: the applicant must provide a photograph or sketch showing how the fence will look from the street, plus a scale drawing locating the fence on the property.

These design-review overlays cover Pottstown's older, historic neighborhoods and the commercial gateways leading into the historic core, so a fence built in one of those areas gets a closer look than one in a newer part of the Borough. Once issued, a zoning permit stays valid for six months, though the Zoning Officer can grant extensions of up to 90 days at a time, and the permit lapses if the work is suspended or abandoned for six months after starting. The Zoning Officer can revoke a permit obtained through a false statement or misrepresentation in the application or plans, which also invalidates any permit issued on the strength of it.
