Backyard recreational fires are allowed in Eastvale if conducted safely under the California Fire Code enforced by CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire. Open recreational fires must be 25 feet from structures, kept small, constantly attended, and only burn clean firewood β never trash or debris. SCAQMD air rules can restrict wood burning on no-burn days.
Eastvale has no special backyard-fire ordinance, so the California Fire Code (2022, adopted by Riverside County Ordinance 787 and enforced by CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire) controls. Under CFC Section 307, a recreational fire is a small outdoor fire (such as for warmth or cooking) using clean firewood. It must not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material, and any condition that could let the fire spread within that distance must be removed before lighting. Manufactured portable outdoor fireplaces (fire bowls, chimineas) have a 15-foot setback under CFC Section 308.1.4, with one- and two-family dwellings exempt from that distance. All backyard fires must be constantly attended by a responsible adult with a hose, bucket of water, or extinguisher ready until the fire is completely out and cold. Only clean, dry firewood may be burned β burning leaves, yard waste, painted/treated wood, or household trash is prohibited under both the fire code and South Coast AQMD air rules. On declared no-burn days, recreational wood fires may be curtailed; propane or natural-gas fire features are not affected by wood-smoke no-burn days. Nuisance smoke affecting neighbors can also draw code-enforcement or fire-department response.
A backyard fire that is too close to structures, unattended, oversized, or burning prohibited materials can be ordered extinguished and cited as a California Fire Code violation by CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire. If a fire escapes, the responsible person can be billed for fire-suppression costs and held liable for property damage.
